Good Turn Week Community Project
1st Topsail Scouting movement were involved in giving back to their community during Scouts Canada National Good Turn Week Campaign from April 29th to May 7th, 2017. The Scouts and Ventures of Topsail helped out at The Gathering Place on Friday, May 5th, 2017. The Gathering Place is located in St. John’s and offers many programs and services primarily to people who are homeless or live in less than desirable housing conditions, people who are often unemployed and to people who do not have adequate social supports at this time in their lives. The goal of the Gathering Place is to foster among guests independence, self-respect and dignity. The Gathering Place provides a caring and nurturing environment with services that include a noon meal program serving up to 200 guests each day, a clothing supply boutique, music program, and various other social activities.
Topsail Scouting providing the funding for a hot meal, helped prepare and serve the meal as well as greeting guests for the day and serving tea and coffee. The Scouts also helped out with various other tasks and look forward the opportunity to partner with The Gathering Place in the near future.
“The Gathering Place is a community outreach centre with the a focus on providing a service to those in need which is very similar to the foundation of the Scouting movement to provide service while helping our community, said Scouter Paula Kieley.” This partnership has been a win win for both The Gathering Place and 1st Topsail Scouts and the youth are already planning a return visit.
Venture, Nicholas Young said, “I’m really proud of myself and my friends for want to help and give back to our community.”
